WHY IT MATTERS
Whistler's trails are shared with black bears,
mountain lions (cougars) and the occasional grizzly bear.
Whistler is home to a thriving population of black bears, mountain lions and grizzly bears. Encounters are common, especially from April to November. Bear spray is widely considered the most effective, non-lethal deterrent available — more effective than firearms in a close encounter.

Lost or Use Policy: If the canister is returned unused and in good condition, you pay only the rental fee above. If the bear spray was tested, deployed, damaged, or lost, you will be charged the difference up to the full retail price of the canister, holster and clip ($80 + tax). If renting in person at the store, we charge a refunable deposit to cover this cost. If renting online, we do not charge a deposit but reserve the right to charge your payment method for the additional amount up to $80 + tax.
BEAR SPRAY BASICS
How to use bear spray.
Our staff will brief you in-store, but here's what you need to know before you hit the trail. Bear spray is a last resort — always try to give bears space and avoid an encounter in the first place.
STEP 1
Carry it accessibly
Wear your canister on your hip or in the side pocket of a backpack — never inside yourpack or handbag. In a surprise encounter, you need to deploy it in under two seconds.
STEP 2
Stay calm & assess
Most bears will leave when they detect a human. Speak in a calm voice, back away slowly, and watch for cubs. Do not run — this can trigger a chase response. Give the bear room to leave.
STEP 3
Remove the safety clip
If the bear approaches aggressively and comes within 30–60 feet or 9 to 19 metres (about a bus length), remove the safety clip, aim the nozzle slightly downward toward the bear's face (not directly at eye level), and get ready to spray. Our bear spray
reached over 20 feet (6 metres), cuts through wind, and projects a powerful blast of spray when you need it most.
STEP 4
Spray in short bursts
Discharge in 2–3 second bursts to create a cloud of capsaicin between you and the bear. Keep backing away. Whether sprayed in short bursts or one long spray, the contents release in a cone shape, fanning outwards for greater area coverage. Once the bear retreats, calmly leave the area. Report the encounter to the BC Conservation Officer Service RAPP line: 1-877-952-7277 or dial #7277 on a mobile phone.
Caution: Do not spray bear spray on yourself, your tent, or your gear. Unlike insect repellent, the residue actually attracts bears. Wind and rain can reduce effectiveness —be aware of wind direction before deploying. Check to ensure the safety clip is secure before setting out each day, and ensure the expiry date is valid.

Be bear smart on every outing.
Bear spray is one layer of protection. Avoiding encounters in the first place is always the goal. Whistler is a recognized Bear Smart Community — here's how to do your part.
On the trail

Hike in groups and make noise — talk, clap, call out "Hey Bear" especially near blind corners or dense bush.

Watch for signs of bear activity: tracks, scat, claw marks on trees, disturbed soil around berry patches.

Keep dogs on leash.

Remove headphones. You need to hear what's around you.

Stay at least 100 metres from bears and other predators at all times —approximately 10 bus lengths.

Never approach or photograph a bear at close range — it endangers you and the bear.

Never feed a bear. Bears that become food-conditioned lose their fear of humans and are often destroyed by conservation officers for safety reasons.
At camp

Store all food, garbage, cooking gear, and scented items (sunscreen, toothpaste, lip balm) in a bear canister or hung bear bag when not in use — even for short absences.

Cook and eat away from your tent. Change out of clothing worn while cooking before sleeping.

Use bear-proof waste facilities where available. Pack out all food scraps —including organic waste.

Keep your campsite meticulously clean. A single scent trail can draw a bear in from kilometres away — their sense of smell is roughly 2,000 times stronger thana human's.

Have bear spray accessible inside your tent at night, not buried in your pack.

Do I really need it on day hikes in Whistler?
Parks Canada, BC Parks and Tourism Whistler all recommend carrying bear spray. The valley, subalpine or alpine areas are active bear habitat year-round, with highest activity in the late spring and in the fall when bears are feeding intensively before hibernation. Many of Whistler's most-hiked trails pass through prime bear territory, including grizzly bear ranges and roaming grounds for mountain lions (cougars). Bears in the valley bottom near the village, along the golf courses and areas like the Lost Lake trails are generally accustomed to humans, but we cannot say for sure if you need bear spray or
not if you encounter one.
Is it OK to test the Bear Spray cannister to ensure it works?
Yes and No. Yes, you can test it, but once you do you will be charged the full retail amount to buy the canister. We ask that you DO NOT test the cans. We check all canisters after each rental to make sure they have not been used and are available in a like-new condition for the next renter.

What happens if I keep the Bear Spray instead of returning it?
After two weeks, we treat this as a purchase of the Bear Spray. You will be charged for the retail Replacement Cost of the Bear Spray, its holster, and the carabiner. If you paid a deposit, the balance will be refunded at that time. If you booked it online, we will charge your payment card for the difference.
I am travelling to Banff and/or Jasper. Can I rent in Whistler and drop it off at theother end of my travels.
Unfortunately, not at this time. We do not have partners in those other towns. All rentals and returns must happen in Whistler at Whistler Hardware. For one-way vacations to Alberta, we recommended to purchase a can of Bear Spray and dispose of it on the other end of your journey.
Can I pick up my rental can the day before?
Yes, you can collect a rental can for the next day 1 hour before we close. Please check our website, www.whistlerhardware.ca, for current store hours.
I am not able to return the can back to the store by closing. Is there a drop off location?
For same-day rentals, you must be back to the store before closing; otherwise, we will charge you the two-day rental rate if you bring it back the next day. If you are leaving Whistler that evening, you need to make prior arrangements with staff at Whistler Hardware if you do not believe you will be back before closing.
